Interview with Martijn and Johanna of Eye of Melian about “Forest of Forgetting”
There are musical projects that do more than just write songs; they build entire worlds. Eye of Melian is one of those rare cases, transporting us to an ethereal universe where cinematic music and high fantasy imagery merge. The project was born from the collaboration of two titans: producer and composer Martijn Westerholt — an unmissable name in symphonic metal and the mastermind behind Delain — and the incredible vocalist Johanna Kurkela, whose angelic voice had already enchanted us in projects like Auri and in her solo work.
The premise is, at the very least, fascinating: what if we could give sound to a fairy realm or compose the soundtrack for an ancient forest? With their debut album, “Forest of Forgetting”, Eye of Melian invite us to disconnect from the chaotic noise of everyday life and immerse ourselves in a world steeped in mysticism. Here, rich orchestrations and delicate melodies guide us through a work that exudes Tolkien-esque nostalgia, the magic of folkloric legends, and the beauty of nature in its purest form.
We had the privilege of speaking with Martijn and Johanna about how this project came to life, the inspirations behind the poetic lyrics, and the process of bringing to life an album that serves as a true spiritual refuge.
